The Liberal Senate Forum

Issues and Ideas

A strong 21st century economy will have to be an economy of the environment. The opportunity lies not in fighting Kyoto, but in embracing it…Great government rises to the challenges of its time. Great leadership would be invigorated by a challenge of the magnitude of climate change and Kyoto.

Senator Grant Mitchell

Climate change is happening in our very own backyard.  Cracks in northern sea ice, homeless polar bears, floods, and wacky weather further south, are evidence enough that we’re facing some big challenges, but the fight against climate change is one we must win.

For too long, taking action on the environment has been framed as being anti business and industry.  We don’t see it that way.  Our key to winning the battle against climate change lies in building a green economy with sustainable policies that are both good for the planet and good for our prosperity.

Canadians know that the climate change crisis is real and want to take action, but all they have received from the Conservative government is inaction and denial. The current government’s ongoing excuses, delays, and misleading targets will result in our country’s carbon emissions increasing until 2050 or beyond.

Liberals, the Official Opposition in the Senate, take their role seriously.  Environmental inaction is not an option and we are holding the Conservative government accountable on this issue.

Here you will find more information about the environment and the efforts being undertaken in the Senate to address this issue as well as the accomplishments we have recently achieved, such as Bill C-288, An Act to ensure Canada meets its global climate change obligations under the Kyoto Protocol, which received Royal Assent on June 22, 2007.
