Issues and Ideas

Canada's North

We know that this area is Canada's, largely because proud Canadians of Inuit and other Aboriginal origin have used it as a homeland for centuries.

Senator William Rompkey (retired)

The majestic beauty of Canada’s North is one of the most striking images of our national identity. Steeped in tradition and largely unblemished by anything but the forces of nature, this vast region represents a vibrant source of culture and pride.

Protecting and defending regional interests is a key priority for Liberal senators and the issues of the North are no exception. Arctic sovereignty is particularly relevant not only in terms of maintaining homelands but in ongoing issues of control and defence. As other regions evaluate environmental issues, the North is a place that is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. These impacts to a land so rich in resources raise additional questions about sustainability and infrastructure.

Liberal senators are committed to promoting the rights of the Inuit and other Aboriginal groups in the North, especially as they relate to any federal government related decisions about this region. Decisions about the issues that face the area ‘North of 60’ must always include consultation with its inhabitants.

Preserving the land that is a vital part of our country’s spirit is a truly worthy endeavour and the information below will help illustrate how Liberal senators are committed to Canada’s North.
